Since the young age of 16, skincare has been a part of my life. This early start has given me quite the upper hand when it comes to understanding what our skin really needs, because it’s truly an individualistic journey for us all. One thing that has made itself apparent is how crucial it is to adhere to organic, quality ingredients as early on in life as possible. Once you experience the difference, you’ll never go back to conventional and toxic synthetics.
As I entered adulthood and the medical field, I learned how our skin is an organ in every aspect—deeply intertwined with many essential functions in the human body. But traditional medical training just tantalized my hunger to know more about these beautiful connections, and longed to dive deeper. This brought me to my exploration of inner well-being, and seeing to what extent our exteriors are informed by how much we are thriving from the inside out.
This journey into inner-outer beauty drove me to unexpected discoveries and a complex web of expanding interest that will never exhaust me. Our bodies function in ways that go far beyond tangible human anatomy; our organs’ functions are affected by social, emotional, and spiritual factors that weave into our lives whether we are aware of them or not.
Our human minds are programmed to take in orders in the form of thoughts and emotions. The moment a thought occurs to us about ourselves or our surroundings, the profound effect it has on us manifests in our skin, digestion, and even musculoskeletal system. I remember the spiritual teachers reminding me that “thoughts become things,” but it took many years of reflecting on that in my own spiritual practice to realize how true it rings.
"As humans, we were meant to live life fully with the clock, not against it."
Many small series of spiritual awakenings led me to expand my practice even more. It was in my study of Reiki that I began to study human anatomy in a completely new light. Understanding my body energetically showed incredible healing, glowing results in my skin, face, and body, and in an overwhelmingly short period of time. Witnessing these miracles bestowed upon me an entirely new perspective; no matter what we apply or do to treat our skin from the outside, like botox and fillers, PRP sessions, or expensive products, nothing is more powerful than our own mind.
That’s where being “mindful” comes in. Consider it on the same level of importance as the word “beautiful.” To be full of beauty goes hand-in-hand with being full of mind. The best beauty advice I can give you is to pay attention to your thoughts and default programming when it comes to your body image. Frequent positive affirmations about your face and body will become your new reality, if you let it.
However, my time in the medical field has shown me an important technical balance. Finding a good dermatologist that you trust and can create a relationship with will always have your best, long-term results in mind by treating your skin from the inside out. They will be dedicated to understanding your individual needs, and know that lasting beauty is about allowing yourself to age gracefully, not backwards or at war with time. As humans, we were meant to live life fully with the clock, not against it.
