4 MUST KNOW HACKS to keep Eye-Wrinkles At Bay

4 Must-Know Hacks to Keep Eye-Wrinkles at Bay
@jensallure

We’ll be honest. Eye wrinkles are something we think about a lot. And not because we’re particularly afraid of them. We actually love a good crows feet moment because it partly means you have an expressive face that probably squint-smiles and loud-laughs — and there’s nothing better than that. Nothing. But still, we do think about them a lot. And that’s because eye wrinkles are pretty much inevitable, unless you happen to bathe in formaldehyde every day.

Our bodies naturally lose collagen as we age. And that’s just a fact. But does that mean we can’t look into options to help prevent eye wrinkles, or keep the ones we have in place so they don’t deepen and make us look more tired than we actually are? No, no, no, it does not. Which is why we’ve rounded up some hacks on how to keep those wrinkles at bay.

1. Remember your retinol

We know. You’re definitely maybe sick of hearing us talk about retinol. And we would be too — if it didn’t actually work. Retinol is the product to use if you want to do something about those under eye fine lines. That’s because it stimulates aging cells and prompts new collagen production, which means thicker skin and diminished wrinkles —- and a newfound confidence to start using prolonged eye contact to get what you want in this world. And yes, we know the skin around our eyes is thin and fragile (aka us after an episode of This is Us) and needs special, white glove care. Which is why we aren’t talking about just any kind of retinol. Start with a gentle formula that’s lower potency so you don’t irritate the skin. Luckily, there are plenty of great eye creams that are formulated with retinol, like this one.

2. Mask up

If masks are good enough for our faces, shouldn’t they be good enough for under our eyes too? The answer is yes, yes they should. The thing is, masks nourish and hydrate the skin, and when skin is hydrated, wrinkles are less noticeable and much more smooth — versus dry and dehydrated skin, which accentuates texture and wrinkles. Look for masks that are cream-based for deep hydration, or that include peptides to support collagen production like this one.

3. Become a sunscreen queen

We hate to break it to you, but if you’re not wearing sunscreen underneath your eyes, you’re missing out. On what, you ask? Smooth, plump under eyes that make people mistake you for a person who gets 8+ hours of sleep every night. While sunscreen under your eyes might not be something that’s intuitive, sun damage can happen under our eyes too — which means a breakdown of collagen, discoloration, and yep, you guessed it: wrinkles. All that to say, we highly recommend wearing sunscreen every day, all day, no matter where you are — and making sure you bring it up underneath your eyes (but not too close!). We love this one because it’s both an eye cream and a sunscreen (and did we mention it also illuminates?).

4. Switch it up

It turns out, the position you sleep in can play a big part in the development of wrinkles. Wrinkles appear because when we bend our skin, the interlacing of collagen and elastin bend — and the more we do it over time, the more permanent the bend becomes. So if you’re a side or stomach sleeper, your face is likely being pressed against your pillowcase and the friction is causing your skin to stay in a bent position, contributing to fine lines. But if you can sleep on your back (and add a silk pillowcase to reduce friction in case you flip over!), your face won’t have contact with the pillow — meaning no squishing, and fewer lines. Fortunately, we aren’t delusional, and realize that old habits die hard, so we invested in this pillow to keep us on our backs.

At this point, we realize that there’s no such thing as no eye wrinkles (unless, of course you’re pre-pubescent, and then we’d like to kindly ask you for your secrets). But in the name of aging gracefully, we stand by these wrinkle-staving hacks.
